Poultry

The ban on the use of antibiotics as a feed additive in animal nutrition has led to a worldwide search and implementation of alternative strategies for preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria in farm animals, to maintain the health and performance of poultry. The first barrier against pathogenic bacteria is the feed itself. Perstorp Performance Additives has developed the product range ProPhorce® that, if added to the feed directly, protects the gut from an invasion of pathogenic bacteria, such as Salmonella, Clostridia and E.coli. The products are based on organic acids and, when applied, they have an excellent impact on animal performance.

A fundamental difference between the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of poultry compared to that of pigs is that poultry have a crop that has a pH of 6-7, which is in contrast with the stomach of pigs with a pH of 2-3.

At the pH levels common to the crop and the small intestines (pH 6-7) an organic acid will dissociate in a cation, H+ and its anion RCOO-. Normally the barrier for charged ions is much too high to enter the microbial cell wall. However some substances such as essential oils, are able to weaken the microbial cell wall in such a way that it enables the charged ions to enter the interior of the microbial cell at higher pH levels. Therefore Perstorp Performance Additives has developed ProPhorce® PH and ProPhorce® BD, which are unique special blends containing both short chain fatty acids and essential oils. These products have an antibacterial effect in the stomach at a low pH AND in the crop and the small intestine at a higher pH. This enhanced antibacterial effect results in improved animal performance.

Due to new legislation Salmonella gains in importance. All feed mills and farms are surveyed to determine the Salmonella status. A Salmonella-free status is of course preferred because then you produce a product that is safe for the public. Poultry can get contaminated with Salmonella in various ways. They can get contaminated by eating contaminated feed but also the hygiene status on the farm is very important. We can support feed mills and farms in becoming or staying free from Salmonella. Our Product range ProPhorce® SA is designed to prevent Salmonella in raw materials or finished feed. Further ProPhorce® SA can be used to insert in feed or drinking water to prevent a salmonella contamination in the animals.

Besides the focus on gut health it is also very important to increase the nutritional value of the raw materials used to manufacture a poultry diet. Grains such as wheat, barley and maize are the most important energy rich ingredients that are being used in poultry diets. The nutritional values of these raw materials are significantly improved by using our ProFare® enzymes. The ProFare® enzymes are developed to break down the Non Starch Polysaccharides (NSP’S) in grain substances. Besides this Perstorp Performance Additives also has enzymes that improve the nutritional value of leguminosae such as soya and rape.

Due to bad weather or storage conditions mould growth can start in stored raw materials. A high moisture content of the raw materials, a high water activity or high temperatures can accelerate this process. To protect the animals from the detrimental effect of mycotoxins it is very important to use our anti-mould products Prosid® MI and if mycotoxins have already been formed to use our mycotoxin binder products Prosid® TB. Our outstanding products from both product ranges protect the animal from being affected by the mycotoxins resulting from mould contamination, thereby securing a high animal performance and a very good profitability.
